The Little Things

An unusually wet and chilly day in Florida caused many tired and grumpy faces throughout the day. And with the planned forecast for the week the same, it's nice to have reasons to keep my mood up. Plus, my birthday is less than a week away, so I have even more incentive to smile.

Young Love

I'm sitting in the studio, about ten minutes before our newscast goes live on the air, and yet I am consumed by this amazing little blog I stumbled upon. Basically this couple is living in my house...or at least doing the remodel of a house I'd like to have one day. It's actually pretty incredible. Take a look for yourself and marvel like I am right now. But don't let it make you unproductive like it's already done to me. Here are my favorites from their transformation!

Music and Art Festival

Though spring officially just started, today us Floridians got the first glimpse of summer; and by that, I mean it rained all day. It was gloomy, cloudy, humid and all around depressing. It made me really happy that I documented the last day of full sunshine. Last weekend I attended the Haile Village Music and Art Festival. The short drive from Gainesville proved well worth it with the music and art from my neighbors. It's days like these that truly make me enjoy spring and great art. I really fell in love with the beauty and simplicity of the images and token spring fun.

Spring Accessories

I am fully enjoying this wonderful spring weather! So much, in fact, that I was overly delighted to put my chunky sweaters and boots away and bring out the shorts and sandals. Sadly, I do not own any of these beautiful spring accessories, all from Forever 21, but I would love to! Each of them would find a wonderful home in my closet. Alas, I can only dream of adding these to my collection; at least until I make a trip to the mall.

2. Flower Hoop Earrings: $3.80
3. Metalic Beaded Bangel Set: $6.80

Hearty Gnocchi

h

Spring is most definitely in full swing, but on what may have been the last cool evening of the year, I tested my adventurous side and indulged my taste buds with this awesome recipe for Gnocchi: a traditional Italian potato pasta made by Buddy from Cake Boss. Now, I'm no kitchen boss but this recipe was surprisingly easy and really hearty. And though I'm ready for summer smoothies and light salad this meal was a perfect ending to the cold season.

The Little Things

It's Spring! Finally, after months of gloomy, cold days we can finally enjoy the sunshine. I've been embracing every little thing spring related for some time now, but only in the last few days has it seemed acceptable. So here's my Spring inspired little things which just so happens to give me three reasons to smile.

Baby Freak Out

After a long day of lectures, gyms and doctor's appointments, it's so nice to have something to smile about. I promise this little baby will make you laugh. I've watched this video at least 10 times now. You must watch!

Can you say adorable!

The Little Things

What a crazy week it's been already! Crazy enough for me to forget what day it is... And it's weeks like this that make me need a reminder to smile. Here's just a few things that brightened my day.

A Vintage Find

For about a year now, I've been on a vintage kick. Vintage jewelry, vintage clothing, vintage bags and frames and trinkets... Pretty much vintage anything. So I was thrilled when my mom gave me this vintage Chanel handbag. Now, fundamentally, this bag is great; it's a soft, off white leather, made in France, and very usable for an evening out. But to update it a little and make it more workable for me, I decided to fix it up.
I started by cleaning it up a bit. It was in good condition, but needed just a little TLC to really make it shine.
I decided to take the straps off and make the handbag a clutch. Both ends of the strap were held together with a gold button, nothing a pair of pliers couldn't take apart.
I wasn't a huge fan of the tassel hanging off the side, so I simply cut the leather strap holding it on.

So honestly, this was a very simple fix. With only a few minor adjustments, I now have a sweet little clutch I can use over and over again.

Spaghetti Aglio Olio

At the end of the day, I often find it very hard to cook dinner. I generally mull through take out menus in hopes of finding something that catches my eye. But more often than not, I'm put off by the high prices of ordering in and the high calories of each meal, so I resort to pulling something together myself. This is exactly what happened to me last night. I resisted the urge to order sushi and pulled a recipe from a magazine page. The meal: Spaghetti Aglio Olio; a traditional Italian dish. I found it surprisingly easy to pull together (in under 20 minutes) and I found I had all the ingredients already in my cabinets.

To make this recipe, start with these very simple ingredients: 3 cloves of garlic, crushed red pepper, olive oil, and spaghetti noodles.
Boil the noodles in salted water.
In a small pan, heat the oil (about 4 tbls).
Add the chopped garlic tossing often so it doesn't burn.

After a minute, add the crushed red pepper.
When the spaghetti is cooked though, transfer it to the pan and add a ladle of the pasta water (this helps to marry it all together).
Toss the pasta with the oil until it's completely covered.
Top with parmesan cheese and parsley.

This dish is satisfying, a little spicy (from the red pepper) and very tasty. Best of all, it's super easy. Enjoy!

The Little Things

Even though this Monday is technically spring break, I'm still finding myself busy and in need of small comforts. Here's a few things that will make me smile all week long, as if spring break wasn't reason enough.

Homemade Oreos

I've been in a baking mood for several days now, but only tonight found the time to try this amazing recipe for homemade oreos. They are to die for and surprisingly simple to make. Think a traditional oreo only moist and warm. They take a bit more preparation than opening a box of store bought oreos, but they're so worth it. You will not be disappointed. I followed this recipe from one of my favorite sites. I may never buy oreos again.

Two Sisters

I have an awful habit of getting caught up in YouTube. It's a terrible and wonderful thing! But among my many hours of searching, I came across a video of a small girl who has her love life all planned out.

Funny, right? Such wisdom in a small girl! The best thing about YouTube is that it links you to other pages, and in just a few clicks I discovered this little girl's sister, who has a great talent! Take a listen

Love it!

make shift dinner

Sometimes dinner can be an ordeal, especially as a college student. but this evening I rummaged through the fridge and invented a tasty (and healthy) dinner.

I started with boiling up some quiona (a whole grain rice substitute) for the base of my stir fry
(I got inspired to use quiona from a blog I follow called clicked and captured)

For flavor I chopped a small orange and a bit of red bell pepper and mixed it into the quiona with a pinch of sweet corn

I topped the base with salsa from a jar and seared beef tips with a bit of freshly shredded cheese for that added kick

The end result combined a sweet and spicy combo rich with different flavors. It just goes to show you: anything can be dinner.
